On Tuesday afternoon, a four-story building in Kolkata's Baghajatin area collapsed during ongoing repair work, leaving several residents injured. The incident has raised serious questions about the quality of construction materials and lack of proper permissions, as reported by local authorities.
Details of the Incident
The building located in the Vidyasagar Colony under Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s Ward 99 collapsed while undergoing maintenance. The structure built in 2010 had started tilting dangerously last year, prompting repair work on December 17th 2024. At the time of the collapse no residents were inside but several were injured in the vicinity.
Residents Blame Poor Construction Materials
Locals allege that substandard materials were used during the building's construction. Complaints of negligence by the promoter who has reportedly been unreachable since the incident have further fuelled the outrage.
Immediate Response and Investigation
Police from Netaji Nagar station and Kolkata Municipal Corporation officials rushed to the scene. The civic authorities have decided to completely demolish the building for safety reasons. Nearby structures that are also at risk have been cordoned off.
Official Statements
Kolkata MLA Debabrata Majumdar stated,
"Such unauthorised constructions without proper municipal approvals are a serious concern. Agreements and relevant documents are being collected to ensure appropriate action is taken."
